*****

Hello, all, and happy Tuesday! This week I'm reading The Whisper by Aaron Starmer. It's the second of The Riverman Trilogy, and it's super good!

My teaser (more than two sentences, sorry for cheating!) comes from page 88 on my nook:

Broken icicles as thick as tree trunks covered the floor of the cavern. Cracked and splintered bones lay scattered throughout. A penguin stood a few feet from Alistair, his black wings crossed like arms across his white chest. The penguin winked and smiled, and Alistair scooted away on his butt and heels of his hands. "It's okay," the penguin whispered. "Forget your worries."

So, what is everyone reading this week? Do you have a favourite beach or summer book this year? I hope everyone has a terrific week! Cheers!

Teaser Tuesday: Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee

Well, I finally finished Walden last week. It was as wonderful as I remembered! Once I got past the first part, which was all about the costs of materials and building the cabin and growing beans, that is. Once he got into actually living in the woods by Walden pond, I started to enjoy it even more.

Anyway, this week I've started reading Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee. I was very excited to discover this book was being published, as I was a fan of To Kill a Mockingbird back in the day, (I thought I had reread that not too long ago, I can't seem to find it, so maybe I'm just dreaming! ), and have decided to go ahead and read it despite all the controversy surrounding its publication. So far, I'm enjoying the book, and think it's going to be a pretty quick read. Yes, it reads more like a "rough draft" than a finished manuscript, but that doesn't take away from the story, which is interesting, but since I haven't finished it, I have no idea whether or not it'll be satisfying. I am going into this not even trying to compare it to To Kill a Mockingbird, but instead reading it as though I know nothing about any of these characters except from this novel.

So, here's my teaser from page 102 on my nook:

She touched yesterday cautiously, then withdrew. I don't dare think about it now, until it goes far enough away. It is weird, she thought, this must be like physical pain. They say when you can't stand it your body is its own defense, you black out, and you don't feel anymore. The Lord never sends you more than you can bear -

Has anyone else out there read this book yet? If so, I'm curious: what did you think? If not, was it because of the controversy? Because there's still some uncertainty as to whether or not Harper Lee even wanted it published? Let me know that, too! Hope you're all having a terrific week, and I'll see you next time! Cheers!

Teaser Tuesday: Walden by Henry David Thoreau

  Walden1

So, this past Saturday my mom and I visited our favourite used bookstore, Buckets of Books in Atascadero, and finally I was able to find a copy of Walden by Henry David Thoreau! It is actually in a book that contains other writings of his as well, so I'll be able to check out Civil Disobedience and Life Without Principle someday as well! I love how this books was obviously owned by a schoolgirl (First name Susan; I couldn't make out her last name) on May 7th, 1974, as evidence by the doodles on the inside and back pages, as well as the underlines, parentheses, and other marked passages in the book! So fun!

Walden2

Walden3

Walden4

So, without further ado, my teasers come from page 235:

The scenery of Walden is on a humble scale, and, though very beautiful, does not approach to grandeur, nor can it much concern one who has not long frequented it or lived by its shore; yet this pond is so remarkable for its depth and purity as to merit a particular description.  It is a clear and deep green well, half a mile long and a mile and three quarters in circumference, and contains about sixty-one and a half acres; a perennial spring in the midst of pine and oak woods, without any visible inlet or outlet except by the clouds and evaporation.

Sounds gorgeous, and someplace I would love to visit or even live! What books are you guys reading these days? Are you into classics, or contemporary? Horror or romance? Sci-fi, or YA? Let me know in the comments! I'm always on the lookout for new and exciting reads! Have a great Tuesday, everyone, and cheers!

Hi, everyone, and happy Tuesday! This week I'm reading Fire by Kristin Cashore. It's a great fantasy novel with lots of action, intrigue, and so far just a little romance. Sorry I don't have a cover shot for you, but I'm reading it on my nook, and I didn't get the picture when I first opened the book, and now I can't get it back. That's one thing I don't like about the nook. Otherwise, it's pretty cool. Anyway, here are my teasers from page 74:

A claw caught her neck and yanked, pulled her high in her seat, and it occurred to her that she was about to die. But then an arrow struck the raptor that dragged at her, and more arrows followed it, and she looked ahead and saw the gates very near, cracked open, and Archer in the aperture, shooting faster than she'd known he could shoot.

Cheers!

This week I started another of my vintage books finds: I Never Promised You A Rose Garden by Joanne Greenberg. This is another book I recall seeing on our bookshelf when I was a kid, but never really picked up and read. At the time, I thought, just from the title (for whatever reason), that it was a book about divorce. It turns out. however, to be a book about a 16 year old girl with schizophrenia. So far it's a pretty good, rather interesting read. Here are my teasers from page 41:

Dr. Fried look at Esther and listened to the words of love and pain coming from the carefully composed mother of a girl sick to death with deception. The love was real enough and the pain also, so that she said, very gently, "Let us, Deborah and I, study for the causes. Do not agonize and blame yourself or your husband or anyone else. She will need your support, not your self-recrimination."

Happy Tuesday, and have a great week, everyone! Cheers!

Redpony1

Good morning, and happy Tuesday! This week I've been reading a book off my Classic Reading List: The Red Pony by John Steinbeck. I am really enjoying this book, as I have enjoyed all the Steinbeck novels I've read. I like how his books seem simple, but are really complex. His descriptions really put you in the scene, and he creates characters you like and you care about what happens to them. Here's my teasers from page 30:

For a long time after Billy went away, Jody stood beside the pony, stroking him behind the ears. The pony didn't flip his head the way he had done when he was well. The groaning in his breathing was becoming more hollow.

Oh, dear, the poor pony! I hope he gets well soon, or I will end up not liking this book very much! So, what are you all reading this week? Do you like and care about the characters? Are they in peril? Will they survive?

I hope you all enjoy whatever it is you're reading, and hope you all have a great week! Cheers!

BODYELECTRIC2

Good morning and happy Tuesday! First I must apologize for the dreadfully out-of-focus shot of the book cover for this week's teaser, The Body Electric by Beth Revis. I was a) on the bus, and b) wearing my reading glasses, so I couldn't tell how bad it was. It's a pity because the cover art is really nice, but with the nook, you only get one shot at a shot of the cover art. After it appears once, it's gone forever! Why? I don't know. Typically you will only get to go back and get the title and author only, no pictures, but with this book, there's no title page at all. So, this is the best we're going to get!

Anyway, I am very very excited to be reading this new book by Beth Revis! I really enjoyed her Across the Universe trilogy, and I think she's a very good writer. Her stories are interesting and exciting, and her characters are also interesting and have a lot of depth. They feel like real people and you end up really cheering for them to succeed! So, without further ado, here's my teaser from page 53:

"Of course I'm afraid," I say immediately, without thinking. The words take even me by surprise, and I bite my lip, considering.

Wow! Pretty intense! I'm only on chapter four myself, so this is quite a teaser for me, too! Do you have any favourite authors who's books you look forward to coming out? Let me know in the comments; I love getting new author recommendations! Cheers!

Good morning and happy Tuesday! I finished reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up last Friday, and found it has kind of inspired me to, well, tidy up! While I probably won't be going nuts and talking to my stuff, or getting rid of everything I own a la, the KonMari method, I do have a few days off from work coming up, and plan to spend the time reducing  the amount of my belongings dramatically. Starting with the book itself. Does this spark joy? Hmm. We shall see!

Anyway, this week I'm reading a YA novel called The Unintentional Time Traveller by Everett Maroon. I'm just a few chapters into it, but so far I'm really enjoying it! I've always enjoyed time travel books, and this one has a pretty good twist I'm finding interesting and entertaining! Here are my teasers from page 39 on my nook:

"I'm fine, mom."

"You are not fine. You haven't been fine since that day in the lab."

So, what are you reading this week? Let me know in the comments! Have a great Tuesday! Cheers!

Good morning, and happy Tuesday! This week I'm reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo. I don't normally read self-help books, but I am hoping to clean up, organize, and reduce clutter in my home this year, so this book sounded like just the thing to help me accomplish that goal. Also, it's not a great big hulking thing, so it's easy to carry around and read on the bus. I've already posted a couple pictures of the book, which is why I didn't bother posting another one here, in case you were wondering. Anyway, here are my teasers from page 61:

To truly cherish the things that are important to you, you must first discard those that have outlived their purpose. To get rid of what you no longer need is neither wasteful nor shameful.

Wow, that's actually really powerful, and really speaks to me! I often have trouble throwing out something that is still perfectly fine or useful even though I don't really want or need it, because it feels so wasteful, and I feel guilty! Apparently, I don't have to feel bad about it at all!

Have you read any self-help books? Did they actually help you? Did they change your life? Let me know in the comments! Have a great Tuesday! Cheers!

Pan2

So, I finally finished reading The Curiosity by Stephen P. Kiernan, and it was wonderful! (Here's my tease for it.) A great book and a fantastic way to start off a new year of reading! Quite simply, I LOVED It!

Anyway, this week I'm jumping into my 2015 Classic Reading List with J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan. I don't recall having read this book before, though I am familiar with the Disneyfied version. I'm curious to see just how different the original is! This is a real life paperback book, not on my nook, and I believe I purchased it at Bucket of Books, a used book store in Atascadero. Here are my teasers from page 91:

It was at this tragic moment that they heard a sound which made the heart of every one of them rise to his mouth. They heard Peter crow.

What are you guys reading this week? Let me know in the comments! Cheers!
