Teaser Tuesday: Walden by Henry David Thoreau
June 09, 2015
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB at A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
•Grab your current read.
•Open to a random page.
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page. (I tend to go over this limit a LOT!)
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
So, this past Saturday my mom and I visited our favourite used bookstore, Buckets of Books in Atascadero, and finally I was able to find a copy of Walden by Henry David Thoreau! It is actually in a book that contains other writings of his as well, so I'll be able to check out Civil Disobedience and Life Without Principle someday as well! I love how this books was obviously owned by a schoolgirl (First name Susan; I couldn't make out her last name) on May 7th, 1974, as evidence by the doodles on the inside and back pages, as well as the underlines, parentheses, and other marked passages in the book! So fun!
So, without further ado, my teasers come from page 235:
The scenery of Walden is on a humble scale, and, though very beautiful, does not approach to grandeur, nor can it much concern one who has not long frequented it or lived by its shore; yet this pond is so remarkable for its depth and purity as to merit a particular description. It is a clear and deep green well, half a mile long and a mile and three quarters in circumference, and contains about sixty-one and a half acres; a perennial spring in the midst of pine and oak woods, without any visible inlet or outlet except by the clouds and evaporation.
Sounds gorgeous, and someplace I would love to visit or even live! What books are you guys reading these days? Are you into classics, or contemporary? Horror or romance? Sci-fi, or YA? Let me know in the comments! I'm always on the lookout for new and exciting reads! Have a great Tuesday, everyone, and cheers!
