What's Up Wednesday - Day Off Edition

WUW Winter Holly 1

What I'm Writing: Not much, but I dug out some old bits and pieces of stuff I was writing in the 90s. Seems like a good time to dust 'em off, and see if there's anything worth keeping.

What I'm Reading: Archangel by Sharon Shinn. Nearly finished now, and this book is actually what inspired me to dig out my vintage work to see if there might be a little life in it.

What Inspires Me: I saw the movie Frozen last night and it was SO good! I loved the twists on what, even just a few years ago, would have been a traditional "romance". And the soundtrack is amazing! It really got my creative juices flowing!

What Else I've Been Up To: Well, it rained last Saturday, so there was no Sweetheart Stroll for us. Oh, they still held it, but the thought of wandering around in the cold and rain and mist, wanding in and out of tiny stores, drinking wine, all while wrangling a dripping umbrella just didn't sound like very much fun at all, so we just stayed home. I baked some rustic Italian bread from a Krustez mix, and made Bear Creek creamy wild mushroom soup.

Today is a holiday, so I have the day off. Sadly I'm not doing anything more fun or interesting than taking my mom 's new Honda Fit in to be serviced. We got a recall on it last week (some computer upgrade or whatever), and figured since we can't do our taxes yet (stupid, piddling little Chase thing we're still waiting for; they won't even send it out until the 18th!!), we might as well get this done.

Until next week!

Friday Five Feburary 7th

  1. While things at work are still a bit of a mess, I think it's getting better. At least there's less crying. I think we're on our way to the "reluctant accpetance" aspect of all the extra work the new system has brought with it, though we're still not happy with it.
  2. Anyway ... on the bright side, the annual Sweetheart Stroll in downtown Atascadero happens tomorrow! I'm really looking forward to some wine and chocolate tasting and checking out our awesome downtown shops!
  3. My lab results finally came back and it turns out everything is normal, except for very, very low vitamin D. Now I know most folks would be THRILLED to have normal test results, but I'm a bit disappointed. Because seriously? Vitamin D? That can't possibly be what's causing my pain and stiffness, right??*
  4. Gah, whatever! In just 3 weeks I'll be in Green Bay, WI for the 10th annual Weetacon (OMG, 10 years?!?) enjoying some very cold weather, and putting all my woes behind me!
  5. Oh, and eating fresh cheese curds. Yummy, squeaky cheese curds!

* Okay, I guess a vitamin D deficiency CAN cause muscle pain and stiffness!! Wow! If that's the case, then just taking the vitamin D3 my doctor suggested should take care of the problem! I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but being pain-free again would be AWEsome!!

What's Up Wednesday??

WUW Winter Holly 1

What I'm Writing: Nothing. Not a darn thing.

What I'm Reading: Archangel by Sharon Shinn.

What Inspires Me: The Seattle Seahawks winning the Superbowl! I was born and raised in Washington state - lived there nearly 30 years! - so I'm a Seahawk by birth (and a Green Bay Packer by choice!). While I wish the Denver Broncos would've shown up to the game to make it a little bit more interesting, I'm thrilled for my 'Hawks, and very proud of them!

What Else I've Been Up To: Between things being cray cray at work (still), trying to work out with my trainer despite the pain and stiffness I'm still dealing with, and still waiting to hear back from my doctor about the lab tests, I've been too tired to do much of anything. Still, I am looking forward to the Sweetheart Stroll taking place in downtown Atascadero this Saturday! It's always a good time!

Teaser Tuesday: Archangel by Sharon Shinn

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

•Grab your current read
•Open to a random page
•Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
•BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
•Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

This week I'm reading Archangel by Sharon Shinn. A real, live book this time, not on my nook! I'm  quickly discovering why I like the nook (or any other e-reader brand) so much: reading on the bus early in the morning when it's dark is much, much easier on a nook! Also, you can adjust the font size, whereas with a real book, you're kinda stuck with whatever font size the printer used. All that said, this is a pretty good book. It's a sci-fi/fantasy genre, but very clearly follows the romance novel path as well. That kinda annoyed me at first because if I want to read a romance novel, I'll buy a damn romance novel, but I'm getting into the other aspects of the story now and just ignore the romance formula when I come across it. Or at least I try to. Anyway, here's my teasers for the week from page 196:

She tried to scrabble up, but rough hands pushed her back down. She felt a length of rope pass around her neck and shoulders, and tightened as if a noose were abruptly shortened.

Whoa, I'm not even this far in the book, so it's quite a teaser for me, too! Happy reading and have a great week!
