I just finished the final book in the Gone series by Michael Grant, Light. It was frightening, gross, heartbreakingly sad, and totally fantastic! This whole series has been a great ride and I'm going to really miss it. Here's my teaser from page 212:
Killing everyone in the FAYZ was proving more difficult than she'd expected.
Staying alive was proving more difficult.
Why did everything have to be difficult? It was unfair.
