My teaser this week comes from page 11 of the second of the Gone novels by Michael Grant: Hunger.

"There was nothing you could have done, Sam," Edilio said, knowing that look on his friend's face, knowing that gray, haggard look of guilt. "It's the FAYZ, man. It's just the FAYZ."

Actually, it should be Friday Purchases, because I didn't just find these books, I bought them! I had to take my camera down to Jim's Campus Camera for repairs on my lunch break, and on the way back I stopped at The Parable to find the One Year Bible Seasonal Devotionals that my BFF had and recommended. I didn't find that, but I did find these:

Yeah, I know the one book is technically for "teens", but for someone who's been regularly confounded by the Bible and the myriad versions of the Bible I've tried reading for decades, it might be something that will be easy enough for me to get through.  Ditto with Solo. I am DETERMINED to get through that dang Bible ... er, I mean, read and understand the Word of God, so if I have to go a teen reading level in order to accomplish that goal, so be it!

Okay, here's my New Beginnings plan for 2010:

1. Health and Fitness

o   Get down to size 12 (currently at 16). 

o   Try three new recipes per month (one of which will be vegetarian).

o   Hit the gym four days per week.

2. Writing

o   Write 1st draft of book 1 of Falcon's Gate Trilogy.

o   Write 1st draft of book 2 of Falcon's Gate Trilogy during NaNoWriMo.

o   Write some poetry.

3. Photography

o   Take more artistic photos.

o   Spend more time composing photos rather than just “point and shoot”.

o   Go "old school": take some pictures using film with manual 35mm camera.

4. Homefront

o   Organize stuff.

o   Reduce clutter.

o   Work on landscaping project(s).

5. Fun Stuff

o   Go to the beach more often.

o   Learn to surf (or at least body board).

o   Get new ink.

You know, I wasn't even going to bother with NYRs (New Year's Resolutions) this year. I've never kept them in the past, and even if I call them "goals" and make them reasonable, I still end the year with a giant NYR/"goal" FAIL. But, MizB at Should be Reading has this nifty idea which I think might just help me achieve/accomplish a goal or resolution. Or two. Or ... anyway, I figured, what the heck, I'll try it. Here's what New Beginnings is all about:

First — post your list of New Years’ Resolutions in a post at your blog (or in the comments here, if you don’t have a blog).

Second — every week, on Wednesday, write a new post about how you’re doing with each of your goals … you’ll have to list them, again, each week, as people won’t remember what you’re working towards, otherwise. Be brief in your updates, as there may be several blogs to visit! ((come give a quick update here at Should Be Reading, if you don’t have a blog)).

Third — after you’ve written your update, come back to Should Be Reading, and share your link so that we –the other New Beginnings participants– can stop by your blog and encourage you!

Important! … It would be absolutely great if you could visit at least ONE other participant’s blog  on Wednesdays and leave a comment on their post to share some encouragement for their efforts! Show your support! That’s what this event is all about — standing by each other to finally reach our goals!

So, now I just need to come up with some resolutions. I imagine they'll be the same as years past, but maybe I'll throw in a curve ball, or something. We'll see.

This week my teaser comes from  page 82 of Going Bovine by Libba Bray. I'm cheating again and posting more than two sentences, but I promise they'll be worth it!

"So, what's the treatment?" I ask.

Dr. Specialist raps his pen against this desk lightly. Dad goes quiet. mom squeezes her tissue. Something terrible twists inside me.

"There's a cure, right?"
