Found (but not purchased)

Twilight: The Graphic Novel by Stephanie Meyer (It's not available until March, but I might just have to pre-order it!)

 

 

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. (I've been hearing a lot aobut this book and though I put it back on the shelf, it is on my TBR list at the library!)

 

 

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. (Another one I've been hearing a lot of good things about and have put on my TBR list.)

 

 

 

 

Purchased:

Jane Bites Back by Michael Thomas Ford (Jane Austin is a vampire who runs a bookstore! How cool is that?)

 

 

Impossible by Nancy Werlin. (Inspired by the song Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkle, the book is about a girl who has to break a family curse to save herself and her unborn child. Sounds really good!)

Friday Finds: New Bible Study Books

Actually, it should be Friday Purchases, because I didn't just find these books, I bought them! I had to take my camera down to Jim's Campus Camera for repairs on my lunch break, and on the way back I stopped at The Parable to find the One Year Bible Seasonal Devotionals that my BFF had and recommended. I didn't find that, but I did find these:

Yeah, I know the one book is technically for "teens", but for someone who's been regularly confounded by the Bible and the myriad versions of the Bible I've tried reading for decades, it might be something that will be easy enough for me to get through.  Ditto with Solo. I am DETERMINED to get through that dang Bible ... er, I mean, read and understand the Word of God, so if I have to go a teen reading level in order to accomplish that goal, so be it!

Friday Finds: The List Grows Longer!

Here are the books I discovered this week:

   
 
  
The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan and The Maze Runner by James Dashner I found on literary agent Laurie McLean's Blog, and The Kingdom of Ohio by Matthew Flaming (coming out December 1, 2009) and hush, hush by Becca Fitzpatrick I found through the Goodreads October Newsletter. All but The Kingdom of Ohio are already on my TBR list at the library, which is already 15 books long! So many books, so little time!
 

Friday Finds: More Apocalyptic YA Novels

Yeah, like I need to read more books about the end of the world or life after the end of the world, BUT I came across a whole list of them at The Book Smugglers. Three of them in particular look really good:

  
 

Floodland by Marcus Sedgwick, The Island at the End of the World by Sam Taylor, and The Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman. I'm probably not going to jump into any of these books right away, since the last one I read (The Dead and the Gone, which was really good, but very depressing and sad) was incredibly painful to read and I don't think I can take another one like it. Still, these three books sound interesitng and I've put them on my TBR list for sometime in the future.
  

Friday Finds: A Vintage Book for Modern Times

This week's find comes from @modcloth's RT (re-tweet) of @tweetfashion's Tweet (hopefully that all made sense!): Mary Johnson's Guide to Altering & Restyling Ready-Made Clothes by Mary Johnson. The book was originally published in 1963, but the idea is a good one even now: take some old, used clothing - not necessarily purchsed from a thrift store, but maybe out of your own closet - and with a little alterating, create a whole new outfit! Brilliant!

Friday Finds for the Week

This week's finds are:

 

Make it Fast, Cook it Slow by Stephanie O'Dea is a book I'm really looking foward to buying. I've been reading her website for some time now and would really like to start using my crockpot more. I understand the recipes are gluten-free so they should be really healthy also.

I've been a fan of Tosca Reno for a while now - ever since discovering the Clean Eating magazine, falling in LOVE with it and subscribing to it. Now she's got a new cookbook out - Tosca Reno's Eat Clean Cookbook - and I simply MUST get my hands on it! Also, I can't wait till it cools down around here so I can actually start BAKING again!

The next two books - Marcelo in the Real World by Fransisco X. Stork and Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith - I discovered at Kristin Cashore's (Graceling and the soon-to-be-released Fire) blog. They both sound really good and I'm putting them on my TBR list, though when I'll get a chance to read either of them is a mystery! My TBR list is HUGE!!

This week's finds are: Prophesy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink (found at Ecclectic Book Lover who is also hosting a giveaway contest for this book), Dark Destiny: The Sleeping Beauty Story Your Mother Never Told You by Kim Hackenberger and Melody Lowe (found at Jaime's blog), and Wake by Lisa McMann (I can't remember where I saw this one). They all sound really interesting, and I just might have to wander down to B&N at lunchtime today and see if I can find any of these. I still have $7.00 on a gift card to use and it's starting to burn a hole in my wallet!

Finding New Titles

This week I came across three new titles while looking for books two and three of George Bryan Polivka's Trophy Chase Trilogy (I've read The Legend of the Firefish and really want to read the other two books!):

 

The first book, The Restorerby Sharon Hinck, is about an average, everyday "soccer mom" who ends up in another world after being sucked through a portal. After reading the blurb, this sounds similar to Minerva Wakes by Holly Lisle, a book I really enjoyed (but haven't read in a long time, so don't quote me on anything), but has a strong Christian theme. Another Christian fantasy book, Faith of the Unforgottenby Leathel Grody, popped up as a recommendation when I was reading the blurb for The Restorer, and it looked really good, too. It's got dragons, which is always a plus! Of course both of these are the first book in their respective series, so there's many more books for me to put on my Wish List! Yay! Finally, Blaggard's Moon is by the same author as the The Trophy Chase Trilogy and apparently has one of the characters from that series in it. Now that this book is on my list, I REALLY have to get my hands of the other two Trophy Chase books!

I bought first place 4 health by Carole Lewis some time ago, set it on my bedside table and have basically been ingoring it ever since, but after getting my blood test results back, I think I really need to open it up and read it so I can get myself back in shape! Diet and fitness is also the point of The Writing Diet by Julia Cameron, which I just picked up at the bookstore today. I read about it on a blog I no longer visit very often becuause it is way too negative and angry for my taste. Anyway, before I stopped reading it, I caught a post about the book (they didn't like it, no siree, bob, they did not! one commenter even went so far as to call it "evil"! harsh!) and while the commenters were slamming it into the ground like a rotton tomato, I found it intriguing, and I'm excited to start reading it. The last book (which is actually in the middle) is The Professor and the Madman by Simon Winchester, and is the story of how the Oxford English Dictionary came to be. One of my co-workers read it and said it was really good, so maybe after I'm done reading all the books I've purchased recently, I'll borrow it from her and check it out.

Well, all my Finds this week were total impulse buys which I will probably regret later. I really need to go on a book-buying-hiatus, as I've been really bad the past few weeks!

Anyway, here's what I found this week:

 

1.  Exodus by Julie Bertagna is a YA novel about global warming = the end of the world. Could be interesting.

2.  Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Graham-Smith. I don't know why I bought this book - I've already read P&P EONS ago, and honestly found it really boring. I guess I'll just skim though it and read the zombie parts.

3.  B is for Beer by Tom Robbins. I haven't read a Tom Robbins books in forever. I tried to read Still Life with Woodpecker when I was in Jr. High, but gave up because I was just lost. I followed it up with Even Cowgirls Get the Blues and eventually Jitterbug Perfume. I didn't finish either of those books - they were just too weird for me (and I was reading Douglas Adams books at the time!). More recently I tried Still Asleep in Frog Pajamas, but eventually gave up on that one, too. As hard as I have tried all my reading life, I just don't "get" Tom Robbins. Still, how could I resist "A Children's Book for Grown-ups" as this book claims to be? Maybe if I can get throrugh this one, I can try another of his books again.
